Facial Aftercare Tips - How to Keep Your Glow Longer

Simple steps to protect your skin after a facial, peel, or advanced treatment - and make the results last as long as possible.

Facial treatment result at SBW Beauty in Peabody MA

You just had a facial at SBW Beauty. Your skin looks brighter, feels smoother, and you're glowing. The last thing you want is to undo all of that before you even get home. Here's exactly what to do - and what to avoid - to keep that result going as long as possible.

The first 24 hours matter most

Right after a facial, your skin is in its most receptive and most sensitive state. Pores are open, circulation is stimulated, and your skin barrier has just been worked on. Treat it gently for the first full day and you'll notice results that last significantly longer.

What to do after a facial

Keep it simple with your skincare

For the first 24 to 48 hours, less is more. Use a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturizer, and SPF if you're going outside. That's it. Your skin doesn't need actives, serums, or exfoliants right now - it needs calm and hydration.

Apply SPF every morning

Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage. Even on cloudy days in Peabody or anywhere on the North Shore, sunscreen is non-negotiable after a facial. Use at least SPF 30, and reapply if you're outside for more than a couple of hours.

Drink plenty of water

Hydration works from the inside too. Drinking water in the hours after your facial helps flush toxins, supports circulation, and keeps that plump, dewy look going longer. Aim for at least 2 liters the day of and the day after your treatment.

Sleep on a clean pillowcase

Your skin is in repair mode overnight. A fresh pillowcase means less bacteria and friction on freshly treated skin - a small thing that makes a real difference, especially if you're prone to breakouts after facials.

Let any purging run its course

Some clients notice a small breakout in the days after a deep pore cleansing or extractions. This is normal - it means congestion that was already forming under the skin is working its way out. Don't pick at it. It passes quickly and your skin comes out cleaner on the other side.

What to avoid after a facial

No makeup for at least 24 hours

If possible, skip makeup for the rest of the day and the following morning. Your pores are clear and open - putting product on top can cause clogging or irritation before your skin has had a chance to settle.

No exfoliation for 5 to 7 days

This includes physical scrubs, retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and any other active exfoliants. Your skin has already been resurfaced - layering more exfoliation on top will cause sensitivity, redness, and can compromise your skin barrier.

Avoid heat for 24 to 48 hours

Hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and intense cardio all increase circulation and heat in the skin - which can cause flushing, irritation, or inflammation after a facial. Stick to lukewarm water and light activity for at least a day.

Don't touch your face

Your hands carry bacteria. After a facial, your skin is clean and your pores are clear - touching or picking at your face is one of the fastest ways to introduce bacteria and undo the results of your treatment.

No sun tanning or tanning beds

UV exposure on freshly treated skin can cause hyperpigmentation, especially after peels or any treatment involving exfoliation. Avoid direct sun and tanning beds for at least one week after your appointment.

Aftercare for specific treatments

After a chemical peel or BioRePeel

Peeling and flaking is normal and expected 2 to 4 days after a peel. Do not pick or peel the skin manually - let it shed on its own. Keep skin moisturized, avoid all actives for 7 days, and wear SPF daily without fail.

After DMK Enzyme Therapy

You may notice some redness or a warm flushed feeling immediately after - this is the plasmatic effect working and it's a sign the treatment did its job. It typically settles within a few hours. Avoid active skincare and heat for 24 hours.

After dermaplaning

Your skin will feel incredibly smooth and your makeup will go on like a dream - but be extra careful with SPF since the very top layer of dead skin has been removed. Avoid exfoliants for a full week and keep skin hydrated.

How to make your facial results last longer

The clients who see the best, most lasting results from facials are the ones who come in consistently - not just once. A monthly facial allows your esthetician to track your skin's progress, adjust the treatment, and build on each session rather than starting from scratch every time.

Between appointments, the basics matter: SPF every morning, a gentle cleanser, a good moisturizer, and staying hydrated. It doesn't need to be complicated. The facial does the heavy lifting - your job is just to protect and support the results.
